Integrated Water Planning

Master planning stormwater harvesting and treatment opportunities

Cardinia Shire, Manningham, Greater Geelong, Mornington Peninsula, Hume, Darebin, Maribyrnong Kororoit Catchment, Baw Baw Shire

E2Designlab has been working with councils across Victoria to help identify the best places to collect, clean, and reuse stormwater—rainwater that runs off our streets, roofs, and parks. For each council, we carry out a detailed investigation. This includes:

  • reviewing existing data and plans.
  • visiting key sites across the municipality.
  • running workshops with council staff and community stakeholders.

We assess dozens of potential project sites—often between 50 and 100—to identify the most promising locations for stormwater treatment and harvesting. We use in-house tools to weigh up the costs, benefits, and long-term impacts of each opportunity, helping councils make smart, future-focused decisions. Each high-value project is taken to the next level, with a concept design that includes:

  • estimated costs over the life of the project.
  • calculated benefits such as how mains potable water can be substituted with an alternative water source (e.g., for watering public spaces).
  • -quantified reductions in stormwater pollutant loads and runoff volumes would be prevented from reaching local waterways.

In some cases, we also assess the condition of existing water-sensitive urban design (WSUD) assets and help councils plan upgrades. Our final reports provide councils with a 10-year roadmap for investment—so they can move forward with confidence to develop business cases, secure funding, and begin construction. We’ve supported this work with councils including:

  • Cardinia Shire
  • Manningham
  • Greater Geelong
  • Mornington Peninsula
  • Hume
  • Darebin
  • Maribyrnong Kororoit Catchment
