Integrated Water Planning

Northern and western Geelong growth areas (NWGGA) integrated water management plan

Barwon Water

E2Designlab led the collaborative planning for a complex and multi-faceted servicing strategy for the Northern and Western Geelong Growth Areas (NWGGA) Integrated Water Management Plan to support the Growth Areas Framework Plan. This required characterisation and understanding of the local water cycle, including the unique and complex local context (such as the Batesford Quarry and Moorabool River) as well as urban development anticipated over a 50 year timeframe. A preliminary analysis was undertaken to determine fourteen integrated water management options that deliver on the established objectives and support the City of Greater Geelong’s vision for a Clever and Creative Future. The options were organised into adaptive pathways of complimentary options that represent a holistic approach to water cycle management. The detailed assessment of portfolios includes quantification of costs and benefits as well as an exploration of opportunities to deliver improvements to planning and delivery. Each portfolio was subjected to an economic analysis that includes two key components: (a) a cost-benefit assessment from a ‘whole of society’ perspective; and (b) a distributional analysis that explores the costs and benefits to each relevant party involved in the projects. With E2Designlab facilitating a collaborative approach with key stakeholders at every step of the way, the final NWGGA IWM Plan recommended an optimal portfolio of IWM options to support the delivery of Precinct Structure Plans and development of this key strategic region.
